a political moment

"Most of the time, we Americans don't pay much attention to politics. We focus all of our energy on our jobs, our families, and our faith. We work hard, play by the rules, and wish only to be left alone. We love our country, consider ourselves blessed to be living here, and ask little from the men and women we elect except to keep from screwing things up."
. . . . .
"Americans don't like getting tangled in the details of politics. We prefer to stand back and see the big picture."
. . . . .
"...what will determine who gets elected this year won't be a set of specific policies, but something simpler, and in a way much deeper: ... that character is more important than personality, that education isn't the same thing as judgment, and that expertise without common sense is dangerous."

Early in one's college years you must decide on the 'major' and 'minor' subjects to pursue on your way to some type of degree.  I'd always known the Family Sciences/Home Economics would be my major but the minor wavered between Business and History.  HISTORY?!  Yup.  In particular American History; always found it interesting, always enjoyed the subject and classes from elementary through high school.  Then reality struck that studying it just might take the pleasure out of it.  Kinda like with those pesky Literature classes...always enjoyed reading but when you had to take a book and disect it and figure out the 'deeper meaning' and what the author 'really meant' it just took all the fun out of reading the book. (Well, some of that analysis did help with The Scarlet Letter, but still the reason for my 2 years of high school Spanish because they were an alternate to the English Literature classes.) Anyway, that left Business as a likely minor but the Algebra-like qualities of Accounting were making it less appealing also.

As it turned out, by the time I needed to decide, the Family Life department at USU had a 'composite major' for those headed down the teaching path (Education was essentially included as an un-declared minor) and the decision was made for me!  So I left USU with a Bachelor of Science degree in "Home Economics Education" having taken only one college history class (5-hour core requirement of American History - loved it!) and no business classes.

So where does that leave History? = a hobby.
Especially the past 3 years of our American History? = it's been both fascinating and frustrating to watch and witness.

So.... while reading this article recently I found it an interesting observation of today's political arena.  Whether you agree or not, whether you vote or not (and you can't complain if you fail to vote!), whether you care or not (and you should care...to some degree), whether you like or dislike your tax burden (as Sarah has discovered recently), we do seem to be in an amazing time of American politics.

Do you like/love that image of eagle, flag and constitution as much as I do?  Here it is again!
