So last night I'm watching Deadliest Catch on TV (no, not the "baaaack" I'm referring to), laying on the couch, my head near the open window, hoping for a cool breeze (it's been HOT here lately), when I hear...
...the howling of our resident coyotes up on the mountain.
Yes, their sound is very distinct.
What do our coyotes sound like?
I love to listen to them so muted the TV and enjoyed their calls. Sounded to me like there were some youngun's in the bunch (shorter and more high-pitched yips) and research today says that pups are born between March and May.
Awww.
Mom thinks Tony (Mr. "T" the cat) is the one reducing the squirrel population on the hill, but after reading this -- maybe "T" is off the hook. Okay, not really but I thought this was interesting.
The Wily Coyote: The term "wily coyote" was possibly coined in response to this intelligent canid's problem-solving abilities when hunting prey. Coyotes will ambush a ground squirrel by waiting at one of the burrow's exits as a badger digs its way in at the entrance. When hunting in pairs, one typically distracts the attention of the prey while the other coyote sneaks up from behind.
AND
Having coyotes as neighbors can be very cool.
You may just hear their howls, yips, yelps, and barks.
My favorite coyote? Yup. Wile E Coyote.
They just don't make cartoons like they used to.

Love to hear them in tandem with the police sirens that also set them howling. Maybe it was Mr. Coyote that gave Mr. T that huge new scar by his ear??
